Die USA treten im beginnenden 21.
Jahrhundert als militärisch und politisch
bestimmende globale Supermacht im Nahen Osten
auf. Vor hundert Jahren noch war ihr Einfluss dort
fast ausschliesslich kulturell. Nichtstaatliche
Missionsorganisationen hatten während
des 19. Jahrhunderts die Grossregion mit
einem Netz von Bildungs- und
Gesundheitsinstitutionen überzogen,
die für eine «puritanische Moderne»
standen. Im Kontext des Ersten Weltkriegs bestimmten
die Missionare Woodrow Wilsons
internationalistische «protestantische
Diplomatie». Deren Konzept einer föderalen
post-osmanischen Neuordnung scheiterte
jedoch an der Pariser Friedenskonferenz
1919/20. Ausgehend von ausgewählten
Etappen und Schauplätzen - namentlich
Türkei, Palästina/Israel, Irak -
untersuchen wir die Entwicklung und Wirkung
der amerikanischen Projekte für die nahöstliche
Welt von Wilson bis Bush junior.
